DMX SHORCUT COMPILATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR “By Position” MODE
In this section, we assume the art-net connection between the DMX console and Resolume Arena is already set up and working, and one or more Arena Lumiverse are already up and running (maximum 4 DMX Universes/Arena Lumiversi allowed in ARENA).
The project involves compiling all DMX shortcuts for the “layer” object(s) and their parameters (No Composition, No Clip), this is necessary to maintain overall and predictable control of the media server, it allows you to exploit the potential offered by DMX programming for a show with Resolume Arena.
The intent is to trigger one or more layers with a DMX controller equipped with fixtures suitable for synthetically controlling a media server organized into independent layers.
The Personality patched to the console can be proprietary to the console or user-created.
The DMX controller should be equipped with fixtures/personality suitable for synthetically controlling a media server organized into independent layers.
The fixture patched trough the Personality to the console can be proprietary of the console or user-created .
—- IMPORTANT ! —- In “By Position” mode, the shortcuts are mapped to the layer object, in the exact position it occupies or will occupy later (if created after the show setup).
For example, by compiling the shortcut file and including a greater number of layers than were initially set up.
In this mode the layer’s position in the Resolume GUI is decisive, not its name or number.
(Ex. The Operator moves, in the composition, the Layer 1 in position 3), causing layers 2 and 3 to slide down.
From that moment in the Media Server the Layer 1 will be driven by the patched personality n.3. on the Console, but also Layer 2 and 3 will change the personality number, becoming driven respectively by personality n.1 and n.2 by the Console.
—- IMPORTANT ! —-
The process will only work if there is absolute consistency between personality parameters and shortcuts mapped in the Arena Composition project, and if the DMX Footprint between Shortcuts (Fixtures) and Personalities in the DMX Console perfectly match.
DMX shortcuts are compiled by having Arena listening to the DMX channel sent from the console, having placed it in DMX Shortcut Edit mode, after selecting the GUI field you want to trigger with that channel, and moving that channel by his encoder on the desk.
(E.g., in DMX Shortcut Edit, click on the Video Opacity field for Layer 1, then adjust the encoder that adjusts the video intensity of Layer 1 on the DMX console, the intensity shortcut of layer 01 will appear in the shortcut compiling list in the bottom fo the composition).
Step. 01
– GUI setup: In Resolume Arena, from the “View” drop-down menu at the top, select the following items: Show Audio Control, Show Layer Transport Control, Show Layer Transition Control, Show, Help, Show Panel Monitor, Show Undo Toolbar, Show Notes Show Hardware Stats, Show Monitor, Show Layer, Show Clip, Show Files, Show Effect, Show Sources.

Step 02
Set up layer 01 with the desired effects added from the “Effects” directory at the bottom right of layer area of the UI.
Step 03
– Duplicate layer 1 as many times as desired to obtain clones, which will be renamed Layer 02, Layer 03, etc. (You can also add those later, always duplicating them from the mapped Layer 01).
Step 04
– Select the “Layer 01”, click on the button “Layer 01” to highlight in green.
– From the drop-down menu at the top, select Shortcuts/Edit DMX,

Step 05
– Fill in all the desired shortcuts for the layer 01 in “By Position” mode by selecting the desired field…

… and touching the corresponding parameter (encoder) for the first layer on the patched DMX console.

Check if the shortcut panel, is “By Position” mode by the side shortcut panel in Arena GUI.

For each parameter, note whether it is 8 or 16 bit (see Console Fixture) and indicate this in the relevant shortcut.
Important Note: When compile 16 Bits parameters, be careful of what DMX Channel, get listened, by Arena field.
Some times it happens that, due to the 16 Bit Channel transmission behavior of the Console, which send on both DMX channels involved with that 16 Bit function, the field of the Media Server, may register, the wrong channel.
Often the proper channel is the first of the couple of DMX channel of the specific parameter, refer to the Personality DMX Chart, and in case of error, compile those shortcut, by entering manually the right channel, to be listened by Arena.
Adjust the range of critical parameter (X-Y Position, Crop or Keystone shutter) according to the size of the output of your project
Step. 6
– Stop Edit Shortcuts DMX.

– Check carefully whether the layer responds as expected to the console instructions, otherwise go back to Edit DMX Shortcuts and correct what needs to be corrected.
– Exit and save composition project.
Step. 7
– Copy the .xml file generated by resolume from the “C:\User\Documents\Resolume Arena\Shortcuts\DMX” directory.
– Upload it to the resolumedmx.org website area, dedicated to processing DMX shortcuts (PROCESSING ENGINE).
– Follow the instructions, paying particular attention to the DMX Footprint and the number of layers that the compiler must build in relation to the fixture you have on the DMX controller.
– Download the resulting file and copy it to the directory from which the source file was extracted.
– Launch Arena.
– From the Shortcuts/Edit DMX drop-down menu at the top, in the Shortcuts window at the bottom, select the file you just copied from the drop-down menu.

– From the Shortcuts menu at the top, select Stop.
– Enjoy your DMX controlled Media Server!
In the Download section of this site, RAW Shortcuts Starting Files, User created Personalities, DMX Shortcuts, Arena Composition and Starter Kit are available and suitable to build your personal Arena Media Server project, driven by your DMX Control Desk.
